 Guide Two

Welcome to Guide Two! In this guide I am going to talk about the way we use screens as emotional buffers. There are five videos inside this guide: What are Emotions?, Teens and Emotions, Parents and Emotions, Screens and Self-Esteem, and Pornography.

In this first seven minute video I talk about what emotions are, why we have them, and why buffering those emotions is problematic.

In this twenty minute video, I delve into how teens process emotions differently than adults, ways teen boys and teen girls process emotions, how screens affect our ability to resolve emotions, and what we can do to teach our teens to be emotionally intelligent.

In this 16 minute video I talk about a few of the emotions parents experience when it comes to managing screens. We are going to talk about fear, anxiety, the Etan Patz kidnapping and how that is affecting us today, ways to reclaim our power, and hope.

In this ten minute video I talk about self-esteem, body image, and how social media affects them.

In my final 12 minute video, I talk about the dangers of pornography, how to to talk to our teens, and the levels of pornography use/addiction.

Take Action

We talked all about processing emotions and using screens as buffers in this guide.

Pick one of the following:

  1. This week write down the times you notice yourself picking up your phone when you are experiencing an emotion. Choose to "surf the urge" and name and process the emotion instead of buffering it.

  2. Sit down with your teen and talk about the seven ways of processing emotion. Which ones do you use and which ones does your teen use?

  3. Choose one of the seven ways to reclaim your power. Write it on your mirror or somewhere you will see it every day. Choose one goal to set in this area and focus on removing fear and adding confidence to your life.

  4. Sometime this week have a deeper conversation with your teen about pornography. Discuss the things in that video or other things you feel like your teen needs to know.

The next guide is all about using screens as a way to connect!
