 Guide Three

In this guide we are going to talk about the ways we can connect using screens. I have four videos for you in this guide: The Importance of Friends, The Imaginary Audience, Social Media, and a fun short video all about Gen Z.

In this first 8 minute video I talk about why friends are so important to teens, risk taking, and hyperrational thinking.

In this ten minute video, I talk all about the imaginary audience stage, how social media affects it, the behavioral rehearsal loop, and how parents can help their teens be socially healthy during this time.

After setting the stage in the last two videos, in this video I talk more about social media. I discuss the benefits and dangers of social media and give parents eight things they can do to help their teen navigate social media in a healthy way.

In my final video, I talk about Gen Z! I discuss slang, words they use to describe themselves, fandoms, and more. Make sure you take the Gen Z slang quiz in the additional resources section of the manual before you watch this one.

Take Action

This guide focused on why friends are so important to teens and social media.

Pick one of the following:

  1. Go through your teen's social media feeds with them. Discuss how they feel before and after they get on social media, self-esteem and body image, and set a goal together.

  2. Talk with your teen about why friends are so important to teenagers and when social media can help strengthen real life relationships and when it can be damaging to them.

  3. Examine your own social media use. Are you happy with the time you spend on it, who you follow, and what platforms you use? Do you use it to connect with real people? Set a goal for yourself.

  4. Watch the Gen Z video with your teen. Take the Gen Z slang quiz together and discuss how your teen feels about being a part of Gen Z.

The next guide is all about using screens as tools and choosing to be more deliberate in our screen usage.
