 Guide Four

You are over halfway done! Today we are going to talk about ways we can take back our control and how we can use screens as tools. There are five videos inside this guide: Screens are Tools, Be Deliberate, Choose People Over Devices, Guard Against Misinformation, and Avoid Addiction.

In this quick introductory video I show a clip from Studio C, discuss the words "screen time" and discuss the purposes of screens.

In this ten minute video I talk about procrastination, multi-tasking, and 11 ways we can more deliberate with our screen usage.

In this short five minute video, I talk about priorities and how we can put the people in our lives over our screen usage.

To keep screens as tools, we have to deliberately choose what information we are putting into our minds. In this ten minute video I talk about the three times of communicators, advertising, bias, selective truths, and more!

This final video is about addiction. I talk about what addiction is, what it isn't, the difference between habits and addiction, and how to know if your teen is addicted to screens.

Take Action

In this guide we talked all about using screens more deliberately.

Pick one of these actions:

  1. Point-and-Call. For one day either say out loud or write down every time you get on a screen. Pay attention to when and why you get on and then set one goal.

  2. Sit down with your teen and discuss how both of you can do a better job keeping technology in its proper place. What are some ways you can be more deliberate in your screen usage?

  3. Discuss with your teen a few of things I talked about in the Guard Against Misinformation video. Where does your teen get their news/information? How do they know what is true?

  4. Look over the eight signs of addiction. Do you see any of them in your teen? How many? Make a plan to discuss this with your teen and plan a screen detox if you are concerned.

You have almost made it to the end of the course. In our last guide we will talk about the 4 M's of managing the tech in your home: Modeling, Monitoring, Mentoring, and Motivating.
