 Guide Five: Parenting With Hope

In our final guide we are going to talk all about parenting with hope. There are four videos inside this final guide, the Four M's of Mastering the Tech in Your Home: Modeling, Monitoring, Mentoring, and Motivating.

In this first 9 minute video I talk about how screens have changed parenting and what we can do to do a better job modeling healthy screen usage for our teens.

In this longer 25 minute video I delve into monitoring. I talk about the ten digital commandments, protecting your castle and setting up your defenses, trust, when and why to get our teens phones, and much more! Don't miss this one. :)

In this 12-minute video I talk about the five different types of mentoring we can do with our teens as we teach them how to be healthy digital citizens.

Van By The River - I had to cut this SNL clip out of the video because of YouTube’s copyright rules, so you can watch it here instead. :)

In this final video, I talk about how we can motivate our teenagers. I discuss what things cause people to lose motivation, give a quick class on teen development, discuss our unique motivational code, and then conclude with a short discussion on the importance of curiosity. Thanks so much for joining me in this course. I hope it will help you be a happier, healthier, and more confident parent!

Take Action

You have watched all of the videos and you are ready to take your final action! Congratulations!

Pick one:

  1. Sit down with your partner and examine your monitoring system. Discuss what is working and what is not working. Look at any pain points and brainstorm solutions. Is there something that would work better for your family? Do you feel like one of the two of you is doing more work than the other?

  2. Talk with your teen about their motivational code. Ask them what types of things motivate them. Discuss their feelings about screens and your family's rules.

  3. If you have not yet, pick a weekly time you can mentor your teen on a variety of topics. Make a list of some things you would like to watch, read, or talk about together. Commit to your teen and put it on your calendar.

  4. Write about something you have learned in this course. What is the most interesting thing you have learned? Set one goal to work on this next week.
