Parent Teen Night: Just for Fun!

Here is a list of some fun activities and some entertaining things to watch.

Memes and Vines

Watch this 5-minute video from my teens and screens course, then talk about the purpose of memes. As an activity you could each look up funny memes on your phones then show them to each other.

Why People Believe They Can’t Draw

This one is SO FUN! In this 15-minute Ted Talk Graham Shaw will have you drawing fun cartoon characters in minutes. Make sure you have a pencil and paper ready to go.

Studio C

We LOVE Studio C at our house. Here are a few of our favorites:

Two Guys on a Scooter

The Absent-Minded Robber

The Armageddon Movie Walk

The Seven Deadly Sins

Save the Starfish

Scott Sterling

Gen Z

Take the slang quiz below together. How many did you get right? Then, click above and watch this 6-minute video from my screens course and discuss Gen Z culture.

Slang Quiz

Brian Regan

Watching a comedian can be really fun, too! Here are a few of our favorite clips from Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan:

Stupid in School

On Flying

Emergency Room

Jim Gaffigan

Hot Pockets

That’s McDonald’s

Video Games

Download this video game conversation starter pdf and discuss the questions that are on there. After you can play a video game together or have your teen show you part of one of their favorites.

How I Held my Breath for 17 Minutes

Magician and stuntman David Blaine describes what it took to hold his breath underwater for 17 minutes and what his often death-defying work means to him.

TV Shows

Finding a TV show to watch just with your teen can be a great way to bond, as well. We love Amazing Race, Chuck, and Survivor. We have also watched more educational/historical things like Band of Brothers.

Board Games

Your teen might not want to play just with you, but it’s worth a try! Some great 2-3 player games are:

  • Ticket to Ride

  • Pandemic

  • Azul

  • Splendor

  • Sushi Go

  • Carcassonne

Teen Choice

Ask your teen to show you some of their favorite Youtube videos or memes.  We love doing this and I enjoy seeing what my teen’s find interesting and entertaining.

Beatbox Brilliance

Your jaw will be on the floor during this unbelievable Ted Talk by beatboxer Tom Thum. It is amazing what the human voice can do!

What if You Could Trade a Paperclip for a House?

In this entertaining 14-minute Ted Talk, Kyle MacDonald details how he turned a red paper clip into a house by trading for something bigger and better over and over. It only took him a year!

I Survived on $.01 For a Week

My teens love Ryan Trahan so he deserves to be on here. This is the first video in a short series that shows how he lived on $.01 for a week. It’s interesting to see what he does and it really shows the power of hard work, perserverance and creativity!

Daniel Thrasher

My teens also love this amazingly talented pianist. He is funny and makes the best videos. He makes playing the piano cool. :) Here are two we have watched together:

When you Accidentally Write Songs that Exist

When you learn a riff and put it in everything

Mortician breaks down dead body scenes from movies and tv

This is really entertaining. The same mortician has some other videos, too, where he answers questions from social media.

History 101

This could also fit in the intellectual category, but learning more about history together can be really fun. There are lots of videos to choose from on this YouTube channel.

What makes a hero?

Matthew Winkler talks about literary heroes, what traits they have, and what we have in common with them.
