Simple Screens Challenge

How much time will you spend on your phone over a lifetime?

I just finished up creating a group coaching class all about screens for teenagers for my other job at Life Success for Teens. We start off by having them use this calculator to see how much time they will spend on their phone this week, month, year, and over a lifetime.

Take a minute to check your daily usage and type it in the calculator. What does it say? Does the number surprise you? How do you feel about it?

Our summer screen usage has gotten a little out of hand over here. We all have more time on our hands, and that leads to more screen usage. I was a little shocked when I put my own number in when I taught this session a few weeks ago. I decided to do a free screen challenge that has the following rules:

  1. Spend at least two hours a day off screens.

  2. Don’t use screens during meals.

  3. Only spend half an hour on social media apps a day.

I am almost done and it has really helped me be more aware of when I get on screens, why, and how I feel after I get off. I recommend trying this yourself, as well as running it past your teen to see if they would be interested in doing it with you. It could be a good way to help them take back a little bit of control over their time before school starts.
